The three trillion dollar war
The cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts have grown to staggering proportions
Joseph Stiglitz and Linda Bilmes
From The Times
February 23, 2008

The Bush Administration was wrong about the benefits of the war and it was wrong about the costs of the war. The president and his advisers expected a quick, inexpensive conflict. Instead, we have a war that is costing more than anyone could have imagined.

The cost of direct US military operations - not even including long-term costs such as taking care of wounded veterans - already exceeds the cost of the 12-year war in Vietnam and is more than double the cost of the Korean War.

And, even in the best case scenario, these costs are projected to be almost ten times the cost of the first Gulf War, almost a third more than the cost of the Vietnam War, and twice that of the First World War. The only war in our history which cost more was the Second World War, when 16.3 million U.S. troops fought in a campaign lasting four years, at a total cost (in 2007 dollars, after adjusting for inflation) of about $5 trillion (that's $5 million million, or £2.5 million million). With virtually the entire armed forces committed to fighting the Germans and Japanese, the cost per troop (in today's dollars) was less than $100,000 in 2007 dollars. By contrast, the Iraq war is costing upward of $400,000 per troop

The Sunday Alternative Editorial: Smile

I was thinking along similar lines recently, is this war turning into the USSR/Afghanistan 1980s war and will this lead to the ultimate collapse of the USA?

If there is a North American Union and EU etc. along the lines proposed and rapidly becoming reality; any collapse of the US will be irrelevant. The people who really control the US, the corporatised government (and so global bankers), will simply consolidate their losses, and the enslaved masses will be part of the dowry.
I think it’s obvious this will be a union of corporate-government interests, not of the people. Certainly you will no be allowed to “just get up and go” (although anyone at the moment seems to be able to get up and come to the UK). So as an aside, the ID cards and internal travel restrictions, will limit 95% of people’s freedoms to those of a modern day indentured servant, serf, landless peasant, restricted to spend your days serving your corporate-government that owns you where you were born. So don’t imagine you’ll be emigrating to California soon or anything! Because you won’t!

Whether the wars and the current predicaments in Afghanistan and Iraq are what the planners at MoD and Pentagon expected is moot in my opinion. Certainly the wars are not following the plan outlined to the general public by neo-con right wing Zionists such as William Krystol. This was the scenario where the invading western armies would be greeted as liberators, and he said, "someday the Iraqis would name a square after George W. Bush" – certainly that to my knowledge hasn’t happened. However it is following the “order out of chaos” plan.

9/11 & 7/7 were the convenient props for the quest to secure oil and gas reserves, the trillions spent are meaningless too, the securing of the hydrocarbon resources is more important. Inflation will render the trillions worthless just as soon as they are printed. However the oil and gas will be used to manufacture goods and services and control the economies, and masses which are reliant upon them. This is tangible having inherent worth, more so than numbers created on a computer, or “worthless paper”.

I think there has been a miscalculation. In September 2001, there were 250-300 million worldwide users of the internet. There were no blogs, few if any private websites hosting message boards where people shared news and information such as this one, youtube and google video were non-existent. In fact having broadband and boasting to friends about how fast your anti-virus updates would now download, was a topic of after dinner conversation. DVD burners were another miscalculation, imagine trying to spread the "truth" about 9/11 with two VCRs to copy your Loose Change and Press for Truth videos!

So the massive miscalculation has been the internet and the growth of alternative media and opinion. There are 1200 million users today, the official stories about economics, terrorism & wars simply can't be broadcast to the receptive masses expecting them to accept the propaganda and go abut their business as usual. If the NAU and EU is rejected, if the masses reject the War of Terror/War on Terror, if they reject the ever increasing Orwellian police state, then it’s certainly game over for this neo-fascist agenda.

If they dont spend it fast it will dwindle to zero.
Machines can produce most things and we have overproduction and underconsumption at all levels.

One cannot avoid those two realities unless one changes the medium of exchange ie the abolition of money as the form of exchange. The irony is that a bankrupt economy does precisely that by making all paupers. Having no money to buy anything increases the collapse it doesn't shorten it.

The other irony is that without major wars to spend their money on the Russians and the Chinese are profiting from the USA's misfortune.

This can only happen if oil continues to sell in US dollars. If the petrodollar is replaced by the euro, the American economy will collapse. Prior to 9/11 Saddam had announced he would be selling Iraqi oil in euros. Since the war, this has now been recified by Washington.

Now Iran is beginning to sell oil in euros.

Can we spot a trend here?

And when the time is right (for them) they just print some more; with interest on it. Money is just a game they play. It's a joke, at our expense.

To ensure the planned financial collapse works, central bankers have ensured that the US Government is bankrupt by February 2009. The useless wars help. Whether Canada or Mexico likes it or not, they will all be forced into a North America Union.

Currently, there is a row going on between the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) and the Fed. BIS reckons the Fed is cheating. This means that neither the Fed or the US Treasury can be trusted to regulate the US financial market - the most important in the world. That is, national governments cannot be trusted.

Therefore, it will be argued, international structures are needed to oversee financial markets internationally. Enter a new World Bank. The global elite will have captured us.

WHAT WAS DISCUSSED AT A CLOSED SESSION OF THE U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES?

Tuesday March 25, 2008 7:37pm EST

BRISBANE, Australia - The House has held a closed session for the first time in 25 years and apparently discussed a hotly contested surveillance bill.

Republicans had requested privacy for what they termed "an honest debate" on the new Democratic eavesdropping measure.

Conspiracy theorists around the world have filled many pages of blogs and emails with theories as to why the public was prevented to hear what their elected representatives said and heard.

That is the nature of secrets: those "kept in the dark" want to know and in the absence of knowledge, seek answers.

Writers suggested that the special closed session of the U.S. House of Representatives discussed a lot more than the pending security surveillance provisions.

Last week's session was only the fourth time in 176 years that Congress has closed it's doors to the public.

Word has begun leaking from last weeks special, closed-door session of the United States House of Representatives.

Theorists wrote "Not only did members discuss new surveillance provisions as was the publicly stated reason for the closed door session, they also discussed: The imminent collapse of the U.S. economy to occur by September 2008, the imminent collapse of US federal government finances by February 2009, the possibility of Civil War inside the USA as a result of the collapse and advance round-ups of "insurgent U.S. citizens" likely to move against the government.

Also theorised was the detention of those rounded-up at "REX 84" camps constructed throughout the USA and the possibility of retaliation against members of Congress for the collapses and the location of "safe facilities" for members of Congress and their families to reside during expected massive civil unrest

Other answers included "the necessary and unavoidable merger of the United States with Canada" (for its natural resources) and with Mexico (for its cheap labor pool), the issuance of a new currency - THE AMERO - for all three nations as the proposed solution to the coming economic armageddon.

Members of Congress were FORBIDDEN to reveal what was discussed and ABC News via WCPO web site at the link below CONFIRMS congress members were FORBIDDEN to talk about it!

Several are so furious and concerned about the future of the country, they have begun leaking info. More details coming later today and over the weekend.
http://www.wcpo.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=1fde2498-d8c8-44f 3-9c94-4a27f8407536

That is the problem with secrets and inadequate explanations for their necessity, imaginations run wild.

Surely the US and many other governments have been bancrupt for years?
It's just a question of when the banks decide to call in the ridiculous massive extended compound loans.
Or go bust.
We have predicted all this quite nicely on this forum and I feel rather proud of you folks. Good analysis.
Interesting to see Newsnight last night saying that secrecy was the main problem. That banks insist on that old chestnut 'commercial confidentiality'and they've been cooking the books behind the scenes to stay afloat and create a far bigger disaster for us all than if their books had been more open.

A true guerrilla collaboration to give audiences a taste of what to expect from the documentary American Blackout directed by GNN's Ian Inaba. The feature length film follows the career of Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and investigates the current tactics used to control our democratic process and silence political dissent. This piece originally inspired by the book of the same name, features Taalam Acey's ever potent prose deftly matched by the animation of Haik Hoisington and scored to the music of another GNN ally, The Soulsavers.
