A murderous gang of neo-Nazi ex-soldiers was being hunted last night after three children and a teacher were shot dead outside a Jewish school in France.
Anti-terror squad detectives believe the killings were carried out by the same band of fanatics who executed four North African troopers from an elite French parachute regiment in two separate drive-by shootings last week.
They say the same .45 calibre weapon and the same stolen scooter were used in all three attacks.
In the latest atrocity, the killer – dressed in black leather and wearing a helmet – screeched to a halt outside the school and opened fire as youngsters were being dropped off by parents at around 8am.
The horrific bloodbath, in a normally quiet suburb of Toulouse, in the south west of the country, stunned France.

Two French police officers have been wounded in a shoot-out at a house in Toulouse. In an operation linked to the killing of three children and a rabbi on Monday, officers have surrounded a house.
Inside is a 24-year-old suspect who claims to have links with al Qaeda.
Police are trying to persuade the man to give himself up. A second man thought to be the suspect’s brother has been arrested.

Mr Etelin defended Merah, 23, against a series of petty crime charges over the years before the radicalised Islamist went on the rampage, allegedly killing seven people.
He said the police strategy during a 32-hour siege of Merah's flat in southern city Toulouse 'could only push him straight towards being hardline and wanting to die with weapons in his hands.'

Mehdi Nedder, who saw Merah on a recent night out, could not understand what had happened to a "normal young man". "Three weeks ago he was in at a nightclub," Mr Nedder told the Associated Press. "And this morning I hear we're talking about al-Qa'ida. How can you change like that in three weeks?"

Though it surprised those who thought they knew him, Merah had been radicalised two years ago, becoming a self-taught, Salafi Muslim extremist. Mr Etelin said he believed Merah's two-year prison term for a mugging could have "provoked hate for the justice system" and "laid the groundwork from which he threw himself into this religious fanaticism".

Merah was released from jail in September 2009, then twice travelled to Pakistan. He crossed the border into Afghanistan, where he was picked up by police in Kandahar – a province with strong ties to the Taliban – handed to US forces and deported back to France.

His motives became clear during the siege negotiations, in which he admitted his crimes and professed pride at what he had done. Indeed, Merah's single-mindedness and the cold, clinical efficiency with which he carried out the killings, leaving no fingerprints or DNA evidence at his crime scenes, led the Interior Minister, Claude Guéant, to warn: "Lone wolves are formidable adversaries."

France is facing calls for an inquiry into possible intelligence failures after a series of murders by a gunman in the south of the country.

On Thursday French officials admitted that Merah had been followed by intelligence agencies for years.

They said that as recently as November 2011 he was questioned by France's DCRI domestic intelligence agency to explain his trips to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

In response, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said: "I understand that people can ask questions whether there were intelligence failures. We need clarity on this."

However, I won’t rule out the possibility that Merah was actually trained by Israeli forces. Marah may have conducted a false flag operation. By way of deception is, after all, the Mossad’s motto.

The admission will fuel speculation that Mohamed Merah was a “lone wolf” and a “self-starter” who co-opted the al Qaeda brand to commit the massacre.

The official, who is close to the investigation into the attacks by Merah, 23, said there is no sign he had “trained or been in contact with organised groups or jihadists”.

Merah was killed in a gunfight with police Thursday after a 32-hour standoff. Prosecutors said he filmed himself carrying out three attacks since March 11, killing three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three French paratroopers with close-range shots to the head.

The killings have rocked France, with President Nicolas Sarkozy calling them a “national tragedy”, and temporarily suspended the country’s presidential campaign.

Reportedly, the REAL Mohamed Merah had never been in prison in Afghanistan.

Merah's lawyer, Christian Etelin, has said that Merah was in prison in France at the time he was supposed to be in Afghanistan.

According to Reuters, the Kandahar governor's office has said that "security forces in Kandahar have never detained a French citizen named Mohamed Merah."

One might suppose that French Interior Minister Claude Gueant was lying when he said that Merah had been to Afghanistan, and had carried out his killings in revenge for what he had witnessed there.

In Pakistan, an intelligence official said that Merah had never been arrested in Pakistan either. "We have no information about him," the Pakistani official said.

Toulouse Jew-killing jihadist visited Israel

Mohammed Merah, the terrorist who murdered seven people, including a rabbi and three young children, and who was killed by French security forces in Toulouse, visited Israel several years ago, it was reported Thursday.

Channel 10 News reported that the reason for Merah’s visit to Israel is not entirely clear, but it is believed he came to gather intelligence for his attack.

The Channel 10 report was based on a comment made by an American officer serving in Afghanistan to the French newspaper Le Monde. The officer told the newspaper that Merah’s passport had been stamped with entry to and exit from Israel.

However, the National Immigration Authority said on Thursday evening that an initial investigation found that Merah never visited Israel. Kol Yisrael radio reported that the National Immigration Authority said that the terrorist's name, as published in the media, was not found in the list of arrivals to Israel. The authority added that it is continuing to investigate the matter.

Channel 10 noted that there are conflicting reports about whether Merah was identified as an Al-Qaeda activist before 2010, which is when he allegedly visited Israel. The report noted that if he was indeed suspected to be an Al-Qaeda terrorist, then Israeli procedure would have called for him to be interrogated at the airport and to undergo a thorough security check.

It is unknown whether Merah was indeed interrogated or checked, the report said. The Israel Security Agency refused to comment on the issue and said that it was still being review reviewed....

Merah reportedly died when he was shot in the head as he leapt from his window trying to escape the oncoming police.

Press reports and comments by top intelligence officials suggest that Mohamed Merah, the alleged gunman who killed seven people including three Jewish schoolchildren in a nine-day shooting spree in Toulouse, was a French intelligence asset.
These revelations raise questions about French intelligence’s failure to stop Merah, and whether this failure was dictated by political considerations. The investigation of Merah was led by the Central Directorate of Internal Intelligence (DCRI), run by Bernard Squarcini—a close associate of incumbent President Nicolas Sarkozy. Sarkozy, previously running far behind Socialist Party (PS) candidate François Hollande in next month’s presidential elections, has benefited from massive media coverage after the attacks and now is catching up to Hollande in polls.
In a March 23 Le Monde interview, Squarcini had confirmed that Merah had traveled extensively in the Middle East, even though his legal earnings were roughly at the minimum wage: “He spent time with his brother in Cairo after having traveled in the Near East: Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and even Israel. … Then he went to Afghanistan via Tajikistan. He took unusual routes and did not appear on our radars, nor those of French, American, or local foreign intelligence services.”
Squarcini apparently aimed to bolster the official explanation for Merah’s ability to escape police: he was an undetectable “self-radicalized lone wolf.” This story is being shattered by revelations that French intelligence agencies were apparently in close contact with Merah, trying to develop him as an informant inside Islamist networks...

The head of the French internal security service has denied suggestions that authorities "missed" the Toulouse gunman because he was a police informer. Bernard Squarcini took the unusual step of intervening personally to quash speculation that Mohamed Merah was an indic or "snout" for one of his own agents in Toulouse.

Paradoxically, however, the allegations, including stories in the Italian and French regional press, began with a remark by Mr Squarcini himself. The speculation has since been amplified following comments by a retired head of one of the two French security services merged under Mr Squarcini's control four years ago.

Last Friday, the day after Merah, 23, was shot while resisting arrest, Mr Squarcini told Le Monde that the killer had asked, during his 32-hour siege, to speak to a Toulouse-based officer in his agency, the Direction Centrale du Renseignement Intérieur (DCRI). It was this agent – understood to be a young woman of North African origin – who had interrogated Merah when he returned from a two-month visit to Pakistan in November last year.

The DCRI chief told Le Monde newspaper that Merah shocked the agent by saying: "Actually, I was meaning [before the siege] to call to say I had some tip-offs for you. But, actually, I was going to bump you off." In French, he used the word fumer, which means "to smoke" but in slang translates to "murder" or "waste". He also used tu, the familiar word for "you".

In other words, Merah appeared to have a friendly relationship with the agent and intended to lure her into an ambush by pretending to have information about radical Islamist activities in Toulouse. French newspapers have pointed out that even low-level "informant" status for Merah could explain why he passed under the radar of the police and security services.

Namibia: Ebba Kalondo 'Angry' With Dead French-Islamic Terrorist

NAMIBIAN-BORN Ebba Kalondo, who is now the deputy head of the Africa Service for France 24 television network, says she is angry with the now dead French Islamic terrorist, Mohamad Merah, for making her his spokesperson during a 32-hour standoff with police last week.

Merah (23) was involved in the killing of seven people: three children and a teacher at a Jewish school, and three French paratroopers last week.

Merah called Kalondo at 01h00 in the morning, when she was about to finish her shift as the senior editor on duty. He wanted her to hear his story and broadcast it.

"I'm still not entirely sure how he managed to get hold of me. France 24 is the only network in France that works 24 hours a day and our footprint is more important than the national channels," she said.

According to her, she did not know at first that she was speaking to a terrorist.

About 32 hours after Merah had contacted Kalondo to tell his story to the media, he was shot dead during a firefight with French security in Toulouse.

Asked how she she felt about him being killed, Kalondo said: "Very cross. He left me to finish off his story without asking my permission."

Kalondo has been working for France 24, a TV network based in Paris that broadcasts in English, French and Arabic, since 2006. She left Namibia in 2001, and 15 years ago, she was a news presenter on NBC.

"News media have changed dramatically since. Technology has changed our work tools, modes of transmission of images and data no longer needs a mediated platform. Twitter has overtaken the news agencies, and since the Syrian revolution, citizen journalism has come of its own. News gathering, distribution, transmission of news, is a world away since I left NBC," she said.

Besides being part of the news because of Merah, Kalondo's hardest stories involved the gang-rapes of women in Eastern Congo and then interviewing the perpetrators; while the biggest story she covered was the inauguration of American President Barack Obama.

Asked what message she has for Namibia on its 22nd Independence anniversary, Kalondo said: "How does one give advice to a young, beautiful and headstrong woman? I simply hope that she knows that she is more beautiful than most."

Kalondo, who is in Namibia for a break until Friday, said she can't wait for the day when she can return home and be part of "my country's development".

Mohammed Merah, a 24-year-old Algerian who claims ties to Al Qaeda, found himself under siege in a Toulouse apartment at 5:40 a.m. today, only hours after phoning a French television news station to give a concise and clear explanation for his decision to kill seven people, including three children, and to reveal that he planned similar operations in cities across France.

France, which was in a state of apprehension yesterday over an elusive unidentified killer and on its highest state of alert (scarlet), now has not only had several relatives and friends of Mr. Merah under detention, but also volumes of information and motives about the suspect, who was still engaged in a standoff with police as of press time. His mother, two brothers, a friend, and a girlfriend are all under police custody.

Merah told TV news station France 24 he was allied with Al Qaeda and upholding the honor of his Islamic faith. He also said the killing of the three paratroopers and four Jewish individuals was "necessary” and that he planned to do similar acts in Toulouse again, as well as Paris, Marseilles, and Lyon, according to Ebba Kalondo, the night editor at France 24 who took the call, made from a phone booth at 1 a.m.

“He wanted to qualify some of the details about the bullet casings,” said Ms. Kalondo. He told the editor he would have acted earlier but funding for his attacks – “from inside and outside France” – only recently became available. The funding was for an assortment of weapons and other operational necessities, he said.

French Interior Minister Claude Gueant told reporters in a press conference today that Merah was identified on March 19, the day of the shooting, by tracking an IP address he used to purchase a scooter from the first victim, a French paratrooper named Imad Ibn-Ziater. But Paris prosecutor François Molins said Merah's actual whereabouts – a Toulouse apartment less than two miles from the Jewish school he terrorized – were not discovered until yesterday.

Prosecutors painted a picture of a man who had a violent personality and “mental disorders as a minor.” Merah moved around, living in several different places, and is “of modest means… he can rent by the month and has several places to stay,” Mr. Molins said. Video analysis of his actions at the Jewish school two days ago helped police identify him, implying they may have consulted violent offenders lists. Molins said the young man would stay alone in his room for long periods of time and watched grisly martyrdom films.

The police achieved a break in the case when they checked lists of French citizens who visited Afghanistan and Pakistan, which Merah had done, three times evidently, and investigators cross checked it with lists of young French known to have jihadi sentiments or identified with violent mujahideen actions.

Another major break in the case came when a scooter repairman reported to police that a man entered his shop, asking whether a spray paint job on a scooter would demobilize the scooter tracking system and where the tracker was. The repairman refused to give the latter information and phoned authorities, according to Molins, the prosecutor.

Authorities initially reported that Merah had a cache of explosives in his car but could not confirm this during the press conference. They said they found a car with four weapons, including an Uzi and a pump-action rifle, and that they also tracked down the scooter and helmet used in the attacks.

The prosecutor said Merah “doesn’t have the soul of a martyr, but wants to kill and stay alive,” although he told France 24 there were only two ways he would stop killing: “prison, where he could hold his head up high,” or death.

The prosecutor’s general picture of Merah clashed with the tone of the man who called France 24, although French authorities say Merah has confirmed that he had the conversation. Kalondo said that on the phone Merah was calm, "extremely well-spoken ... very polite ... used no strong language ... was unruffled and sure of himself.

"He said he wanted to avenge his brothers and sisters in Palestine" and was angered by the French law banning the wearing of the burqa, the full-length veil worn by some Muslim women, in public.

Police in Paris have linked a 7.65mm gun to four separate murders in the Essone area of the capital since November, raising the possibility of another serial killer following the death of Mohamed Merah in Toulouse on 22 March.

The fourth victim, a 47-year-old woman of Algerian origin, was shot four times in the head on Thursday. The gunman was seen to flee on a motorbike.

Interior Minister Claude Guéant told radio Europe-1: "This series of killings deserves our maximum attention and we're putting all our resources into this affair." Prosecutor Marie-Suzanne Le Quéau told a press conference that police were trying to determine whether there the victims were linked, and whether there was one killer or more than one: "On the theory of a serial killer, I will simply say that three of the murders – the second, third and fourth, show similarities."

However, it was also stressed that as yet no terrorism link had been made, unlike in the seven murders around Toulouse by Merah, who also used a motorbike.

Le Quéau said that a suspect in the first attack was still being held, but had retracted a confession. The fourth victim, Nadjia Lahsene, was shot while in the entrance hall of her housing block in the district of Grigny. A neighbour was quoted as saying: "Everyone is in shock. She didn't feel threatened. She's a normal person, simple, no history." Police appealed for witnesses who saw the gunman, described as tall and slim.

The first victim, Nathalie Davids, a 35-year-old lab assistant, was shot in her block's carpark in Grigny on 27 November. On 22 February, her 52-year old neighbour, Jean-Yves Bonnerue, was killed in the entrance to their building. The third, an 81-year old man, was shot in the suburb of Ris-Orangis on 19 March. 19th.

Le Queau said that over 100 officers have been deployed to investigate the case and carry out identity checks in the area of the attacks. All were killed execution-style, with shots in the head. Le Quéau also said that all four deaths occurred at the same time of day, around 4 to 6 pm. Their locations are also near two trunk roads, allowing a fast escape.

Following the first murder, a man aged 46 was arrested in December; he had been jilted during an affair with the woman, and had a record for petty crime. While in custody and with his lawyer, the man had confessed, but he then made a retraction in front of the investigating judge.

The killings come as France is still distressed by the terror attacks in the south that left dead three Jewish children and a rabbi, plus three paratroopers. Mohamed Merah, the al Qaeda-inspired gunman, also used a powerful motorbike. He was identified, put under siege in his flat, and shot dead while leaping out of the window.

France is holding the first round of its presidential election on 22 April, and the Toulouse case has played into a sharpening of the tone in the campaign; an opinion poll put Socialist François Hollande's lead over President Nicolas Sarkozy at its narrowest so far.
